This is a story about a girl from Kansas falling in love with a boy from Kenya. Daniel came to Kansas on a running scholarship and met Miriam at our local church. Kansas was the groundwork for their love to grow, but Kenya is where they said yes to each other forever. A few months ago they took a trip to Kenya to visit Daniel's family. As they experienced the culture together, Daniel was able to share with Miriam where he grew up. He took her on a safari and then shared some traditions with her with a close tribe called Maasai. It was there, with all the people of the Maasai Tribe that he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes, and to commemorate the occasion they brought home the Maasai blanket (which we used in their engagement session).
I love their story because it shows us that love knows no color or culture, God can bring two people together from different countries and backgrounds and work it for His glory. Daniel and Miriam were so fun to photograph because their connection was so visible and tender. Daniel runs cross country for the University of Kansas, so they asked if we could do their session at Rim Rock, the cross country farm near Lawrence. I said, "Of course!" I'm so glad I did, because this location was stunning! The colors of the trees were a perfect background to document their story. I had so much fun with Taylor taking her senior pictures. She said she was shy, but this girl photographs so candidly it's insane! We played around in flowers, fields, forests, and rocks. It was wild and fabulous, and probably my favorite portraits I've done. The portion in the rocks looks straight up like a model shoot and girlfriend looks like a ROCKSTAR. While editing these I couldn't help but smile, because Taylor's smile is so bright and beautiful.
During shooting I asked her what her favorite TV show was she said "Jane the Virgin." So naturally, I went home and started watching it with my husband. And now she's to blame for our obsession with that show. ;) So thanks for that Taylor. You rock. View her session below, preferrably while listening to What Do You Love by Seeb. <3 This one's a special one for me guys. Because this wedding wasn't just clients who came to me to photograph their wedding. I've known Samuel & Kayci for years now. They are dear friends to me; Kayci was my roommate, and Samuel was my husband's roommate. This wedding was so special for me to photograph because I got to document the culmination of a relationship I watched grow in front of my own eyes. I lived with Kayci through her singleness, her realizing she had feelings for Sam, their dating season, and finally their engagement. Each season was so unique and special, and it was so amazing to watch God work in both their lives, bringing them together in such a beautiful way.
I remember the nights when Kayci would come into my room. We'd talk about love and she'd say, "I just want him to propose already!" She's a woman who knows what she wants, and she always knew Sam was the one. She even asked me to photograph their wedding before he had proposed. Because she just knew, and I think that's so admirable. And guys, it was the sweetest experience to be apart of their big day in such a unique way. Watching them say their vows to each other I realized this was the day they had both been so diligently waiting for. The day their hearts became one. I'm so proud of these two friends, and I'm so proud of these photos. I hope while viewing their gallery you feel the love and laughter radiating through, because these two people know how to love and party hard. This wedding was filled with both. Enjoy their beautiful backyard autumn wedding. <3 I heard their story at different times from both of them, and getting to hear each version was a treat because they told it from totally different perspectives. It was hilarious. Here's the spark notes: A friend introduced Jordan to Jenelle at the library one day, and they didn't think much of it at the time. However, being in the same major (mechanical engineers) they realized they had a lot of classes together. They became fast friends, studying and hanging out together all the time. And as you'd expect, Jordan started developing feelings for Jenelle; however, Jenelle wasn't quite on the same page yet. Then one night Jordan took Jenelle on a "date," parenthesized because Jenelle didn't quite realize it was a date. At the end of the evening he decided to go for it and kiss her. Oops. She quickly turned her head as he leaned in, and what happened afterwards was one of those #awkwardmoments straight from a chick flick gone wrong. I'm not quite sure how they recovered after that, but by a miracle of God Jenelle's feelings started to turn around, and a few months later they started dating. The rest is history. I love their story because 1) it's hilarious (especially hearing about the failed kiss part from Jordan haha) and 2) it's such a beautiful example of love that never gives up, that pursues a heart so diligently and patiently. Their love reminds me of how Jesus pursues our hearts just the same. It's so beautiful.
This is one of my favorite engagement sessions, mainly because Jordan and Jenelle were SO comfortable in front of the camera. They were playful, energetic, and so candid. It definitely shows in the photos coming across as playful and effortless. They were goofy and full of laughter the whole night, and it was such a treat to photograph these two. And to top it all off, their hearts are so giving and kind. When I locked my keys in the car during our location transition, they waited with me after the session was over while AAA came to help. <3 Check them out below! Play something energetic while viewing. My choice is Hold My Hand by Jess Glynne. It matches their energy perfectly. |
